What is my credit score?

One of the most important financial indicators is your credit score.  Like or not, this score is used by credit card companies, auto lenders, landlords, insurance companies, etc.  Knowing what your score is and how you can maintain or improve it are very important.

Where can I get my score?

All of the credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) offer credit scores for a fee.

There are also a number of companies out there that provide correct scores free so long as you agree to their terms and conditions which usually include them emailing you with credit offers on a regular basis.

We at Wallet Wisely feel one of the best sources to get your score is from myFICO.  MyFICO is the official consumer division of FICO, the company that literally invented the FICO credit score. FICO® Scores are the most widely used credit scores, and have been an industry standard for more than 25 years. It makes sense to focus on this score.

MyFICO offers completely FREE credit scores and monitoring.  They do have premium paid plans but you can certainly begin with a free service.

Another credit score that is used widely is the VantageScore. The VantageScore, which is the only “tri-bureau” credit scoring model available at all three nationwide credit reporting agencies. Created in 2013 by the three main credit rating agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian) This model also ranges from 300 to 850.
