What is this settlement for?
In 2018, a scandal broke out regarding Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm that had obtained data on millions of Facebook users without their consent. The data was allegedly used to influence the 2016 US presidential election and the Brexit referendum in the UK. The scandal led to a lot of public outrage and investigations by various government agencies.
Recently, it was announced that Facebook had reached a preliminary $725 million settlement without admitting any wrongdoing and denying any liability. However, this agreement means that U.S. residents who used Facebook anytime between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022 can file a monetary claim for a portion of the settlement money.
How to claim your money?
Any U.S. resident can go the claims website HERE to fill out and submit their claim. The deadline for submitting a Claim Form is August 25, 2023 at 11:59 PM PT
How much will I get?
Unknown. This will depend upon how many people file claims and what fees and expenses are part of the final settlement. There is a September 7 final approval hearing when the court will decide whether to approve the deal and how much attorney’s fees and other costs will be allowed. The court says that settlement payments will be distributed as soon as possible if the court grants final approval of the settlement and after any appeals are resolved.
